Have you ever wanted to host a Fairy Tale Ball but didn’t know exactly how to do it? Check out this blog post about how to prepare your students, how to publish a Fairy Tale story, what materials you will need, how the students will dress, and what refreshments you will have! Read on…

How to Begin Your Fairy Tale Unit:

I love having my students write fairy tales. I usually start around the end of April and this usually lasts up until our Fairy Tale Ball. Each student picks a fairy tale to retell in their own words, or you can have your students make up their own fairy tale. We take the story through the writing process:

Brainstorming, First Draft, Student Conference, Proofreading, Teacher Conference, Editing and Revision, Final Draft and Publishing. Here is my anchor chart that I use to teach my students what Fairy Tales are:

First, I make sure that I have all of my materials and supplies organized to help my students write their favorite fairy tale. Here are some templates that I have my students use to write their Fairy Tale. Then, when they are all finished writing their story, we staple their book together with a cover page, title page, dedication page, author page, and compliment page.

Here are the Story Element Cards that I use to “Mix the Magic”. I have a mixing bowl at my teacher table and after every Fairy Tale that I read, I use the cards to ask the students about each story element. Then, I put the cards into the bowl and mix with a wand. The kids LOVE IT!!!

Next, when Fairy Tale Balls comes around the students each bring a food that represents their fairy tale. For example: Snow White brings apples, Jack and the Beanstalk brings celery sticks, Red Riding Hood brings banana bread. I also have a parent volunteer to make a castle cake! Here is a picture of our spread from different years:

In addition, we invite the parents in to walk around and listen to the students read their fairy tales. Each student gets to dress up as their favorite character from their story.

The parents have a blast getting to hear their child read! They can also write compliments in the back of their book.

Finally, I also take pictures of my students in the Author’s Chair that morning before the Ball and I send it to their parents through Seesaw. They love seeing pictures of their baby all dressed up!
